In 2026 Gloves for Africa made Ghana a priority. We visited gyms, ran outreaches, held workshops, sat with a statesman and left a community knowing that someone from outside had walked in — and believed in them.
The Endorsement
Azumah Nelson signed our Golden – Gloves and backed our mission in Ghana
Africa's greatest boxer. Three-time world champion. Ghana's statesman. The first African inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. And the man who grew up in the same challenged streets that Gloves for Africa walks into every day.
During our Ghana visit, we had the honour of sitting with The Professor. He listened to our mission. And then he picked up a pen and signed our Golden Gloves, every one of which goes to auction, with proceeds funding the #1MillionGlovesCampaign.

For our founder Chuks — who grew up watching Azumah Nelson as his childhood hero — this moment was everything. His hero. Our mission. One signed glove that carries both.
We met the Director General of Ghana's National Sports Authority
Mr. Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, appointed by President Mahama with a mandate to use sport for national cohesion, received GFA's founder Chuks Uwaechia and the African Coordinator, Femilee Olawuyi for a meeting that matters.
We walked in with the truth: children as young as 7 years old on the streets of West Africa. 70% of street children dropped out of school. Drug exposure, exploitation, crime, all filling the space where hope should be. And we made the case that boxing, structure, discipline, community, can reach those children when nothing else can.
Ghana's National Sports Authority is now engaged with our vision. When a government listens, the mission becomes something bigger than a foundation.
We visited four boxing gyms across Accra. Not as visitors. As believers. Every gym received gloves, inspiration and a clear message: you are not alone in this work.
Will Power Boxing Gym
One of Jamestown's most active community gyms, in one of Accra's toughest and most historic neighbourhoods. Coaches showing up every day for young people who need structure. We showed up too. With gloves. Because a gym without gloves is just four walls, but a gym with gloves and a coach who cares is where champions are made.
Black Panther Boxing Gym
We brought something extra to Black Panther; the WBC Championship Belt. We put it in the hands of every young person in that gym. And we told them: impossible does not exist. Not in this community. Not for these young people. Not while Gloves for Africa is showing up.

Akotoku Boxing Academy — founded 1974
One of the most historic boxing gyms in all of Africa. The gym that trained Azumah Nelson, DK Poison, Ike Quartey and Alfred Kotey, four world champions, from one community. We walked in and felt the weight of that legacy.
We were welcomed by Coach Elvis Robertson, a descendant of Ghanaian boxing legend Jerry Klutei Robertson. A man carrying boxing royalty in his blood. Still coaching. Still believing the next world champion is already training inside those walls.
Wisdom Boxing Gym — we came back
We were here in 2024. We came back in 2026. When Gloves for Africa makes a promise, we keep it. We brought gloves. We reminded them of the champion skills we spoke about in our last visit. And we presented something special: a Golden Gloves casing to Coach Asare Ofori, in recognition of his years of quiet, consistent work building champions in a challenged community.
The children held the WBC belt. And the room changed. Because when a child from Jamestown holds a world championship belt, a ceiling they didn't know they believed in starts to crack.
Great records. No platform. We changed that.
What is the point of a great record if nobody knows your name? That question is what gave birth to Beyond The Ring, GFA's personal branding workshop for the boxing community.
In partnership with Wisdom Boxing Gym in Jamestown, we brought boxers, coaches, managers and administrators into one room. We talked about personal brand. Social media. How to attract sponsors. How to turn a boxing career into a platform that outlasts the final bell.
Coaches who had never thought about their own visibility left with a plan. Boxers who had never seen themselves as brands started to understand what they had been sitting on. Something that happened in that room, in Jamestown, Accra, that will keep happening long after we left.
We went to a quiz competition — and told every finalist the same thing.
"You are all winners."
Because in life, it is not just the winner who wins. It is the second position. Third position. Fourth position. Every position. You all showed up. You all prepared. You all tried.
That is the spirit we believe in. And that is the spirit we will keep showing up for.
